Updated Workout Plan

28 Feb

Ever since I turned another year older last week, I have been thinking about changing up my workout routine to be less harsh on my aging body.

I love doing cardio and I love running on the treadmill in the gym.  I feel like I get such a great cardio workout when I run and always get the best runners high when I am done.  I usually run at a speed anywhere from 6.0 (6.6 is my comfortable speed) to 10 mph.  I like really pushing myself to run faster and harder then my last given run.  When I turned 28, I realized I’ve been running hard for 10 years.  During my last year of running, I started noticing some hip pain.  The more I ran, which was a lot since I was trying to get fit for my wedding, the more my hip hurt.  It got so severe I had to take a break from running all together.  I know I’ve been harsh on my body this past year with workouts and I want to make sure that I’ll always be able to run and have strong hips and knees so I decided to change up my workout plan.  The new plan includes less running, more strength training and more yoga.

Here is what my new workout plan looks like based off working out six days a week:

  • Back and Shoulders
  • Biceps and Tricpes
  • Pecs and Intervals
  • Legs and Intervals
  • Cardio- Running
  • Cardio- Other (not running)

Plus, yoga 4 days a week (I do hot yoga at home for a little over a hour) and ab work two days a week.

I think refocusing my workouts on strength  and yoga and not cardio will be a great much needed change.  My hips and knees will be so happy to get a break from all the pounding they go through from running.  As much as I will miss it, I will still be getting in one run a week and quick interval runs as well.

In addition, we usually walk the puppy 2-4 miles every day, so I will still be getting in enough calorie burning activity.

Ok, enough about my workouts, here are some foods I ate over the weekend.  The Husband had a friend from college out in AZ so we went from the Husband and the Ladies (my mom and aunt) to me and the guys.

Friday morning I had a screw driver with my eggs and they guys had blood Mary’s.

Friday afternoon we went to the Firehouse Kitchen for happy hour.  I had white wine and we all split an order of calamari for an appetizer.

After our appetizer, we headed over to the downtown Sushi restaurant.  I had never been there but I loved everything about the place and will definitely be back!

The sushi was fabulous!  I really liked this fish platter they served this roll on!  : )

After sushi, we headed over to a local bar called Coyote Joe’s.  The Husband and I hadn’t been there in years (we typically don’t hang out at bars).

I liked the live music outside, although it was freezing.  After I took this pic, I decided to call a cab.  The boys were having a little too much fun!  : )

Saturday, the boys headed up to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch college basketball.  That didn’t sound fun to me, so I stayed home to clean and do laundry.  I also wanted to hang out with little Quincy!

Sunday morning, the Husband and his buddy went out to breakfast at Wild Flower.  I didn’t feel like going, so I had him pick me up a Asian Chicken Salad.  I felt like I hadn’t been getting in enough vegetables so I had a salad for breakfast.

It was huge and I could only eat half.

The Husband’s friend had to leave Sunday afternoon.  Before he had to go, we made flank steak fajitas.  I had one stuffed with loads of vegetables.

After we dropped Tim off, we ran a few errands and then it was time to get home and watch the Oscars!  I was more into the fashion this year since I didn’t see any of the nominated movies this past year except for The Social Network and Inception.  As much as I wanted to stay up and watch the whole show, by 8:45, I was so exhausted form hosting company for the last week and a half, I feel asleep.

Dinner last night was an Ezekiel pita with jalapeño hummus.

This morning for breakfast I had a banana, 1/2 cup of coffee and a slice of low sodium Ezekiel bread with peanut butter.

AM Snack was a Peach Chobani yogurt.

Lunch was the other half of my salad from yesterday and a Boca Burger on an Ezekiel Pita.

Tonight we are going to a friends house for a little birthday party.  I’m sure it will be an early night though.  I might try and get in a little yoga before we go since we had a rest day today for working out.

Question:  Do you eat sushi?  What is your favorite thing to order when at a Japanese restaurant?

Your workout plan looks great! You will definitely see some definition with the added strength and intervals.

I am slightly obsessed with sushi – to the point of eating it at least once a week. At least it’s a healthy addiction right?

I think your new plan sounds great! My uncle was a big runner and he ended up having to get hip surgery b/c he didn’t listen to his body at a young age. Hot yoga sounds so fun. I’ve never tried it.

Your wise beyond your years. I turned 40 last Sept. and have really been working out so intensely with almost daily bootcamp classes that I’m always sore. I just got my Barkan Hot Yoga DVD in the mail, so I’m going to start incorporating that as well. (Thanks to your recommendation.)

I really enjoy working out intensly, but needed to change up my workout, so I decided to do less intense and see how my body responds! I always need to change up my workouts about every 6 weeks, or I get super bored!
