Week 14 Pregnancy Update – Lemon

17 Aug

The first week of second trimester is over!  I’m already excited to be saying that about third trimester!  : )  This week wasn’t so bad.  I actually really enjoyed it until I got some headaches.  Never fun, but I guess it’s all part of the process.  It is still hard for me to fathom that a baby and size of a lemon is inside me and I can’t even feel it.  A lemon sounds SO big to me already!!!

How Big is Baby?

Your adorable little fetus is busy with thumb sucking, toe wiggling, and (not so cute but equally amazing) making urine and breathing amniotic fluid as the liver, kidneys and spleen continue to develop. Lanugo (thin, downy hair) is growing all over the body for warmth. (TheBump.com)

According to BabyCenter.com

This week’s big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he’ll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you’re having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.

In other news: Your baby’s stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body’s growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that’s in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He’s starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby’s liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it’s doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can’t feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist’s hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

How I’m Feeling Physically

Physically I’m feel good except for the massive headache I got on Monday and still have and it is now Wednesday.  I don’t like taking the Tylenol the Dr’s say you can have so I’m just trying to get through them.  I’m naturally prone to headaches and think since my sinuses are working in overdrive plus battling allergies and new hormones that is what’s causing my headaches.  I talked to the Dr. about getting headaches and she said they are natural to get during pregnancy.  Other than that, I’ve decided I need to slow my pace down a bit.  I was so busy with work last week and then didn’t really have a relaxing weekend since it was filled working and clean and running errands.  I went into Monday utterly exhausted.  In fact week 14 has been my most tired in a while.  I just keep pushing forward and think I might need to adjust and take life a little slower these days.  Being so tired could also be another culprit of my headache too.  Even more reason to slow down a bit.

How I’m Feeling Emotionally

Emotionally, I am so excited!  We have our next prenatal appointment on Monday just for a quick weigh in and check up.  We do get to hear the heartbeat and I’m so pumped for that.  At our next appointment we will be able to schedule our gender scan for about three weeks out!  Yay!  Only 3 1/2 weeks left until we find out if we have a little boy or girl on the way!  I can’t wait!  Seriously, I can’t wait!  I am so excited to finally be able to start shopping for the baby and getting some things in place.  Keith is still 100% positive we are having a boy.  I was thinking we were having a boy, then switched to thinking we were having a girl and now I am just confused and have no feelings on way or another.  We don’t care what we have, we are so excited either way!  : )

Odd Ramblings

  • Sleeping:  8 hours a night
  • Naps:  I think I took three this past week.  I’m still loving naps but lately they make me not be able to fall asleep at night.
  • Cravings:  Fruits, Dried Fruit
  • Foods I still Can’t Stand:  PB on toast and white fish.  I tried eating a PB English Muffin and had to throw most of it away!
  • What I’m Most Excited For:  Our Appointment in 5 Days!
  • Weight Gained so Far:  1lb

I would take pics with my face, but I usually take this pics either first thing in the AM or last thing at night looking a little disheveled.

So exciting — I remember all these stages and loved them =)

Tylenol really is a-ok to take (I’ve done the research) but also studies show that tylenol is not effective for headaches because it doesn’t treat the same pain receptors. Magnesium supplements work as do cold compresses…good luck!

Thanks! Cold compresses usually stop the pain for a bit but never fully treats my headaches. I caved and took a Tylenol. I hate taking them. I’ll have to swing by the drug store and pick up some magnesium. I’ve been told to take it before for my headaches but never have. I’ll look into it! Thanks!
