Interview with Kelly Killoren Bensimon

Kelly Killoren Bensimon is a fashion model, author, philanthropist and mother of two beautiful girls.  She is a graduate from Columbia University and has graced the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Mademoiselle.  She is a busy woman.  I became familiar with her on The Real Housewives of New York.  I was a loyal fan, so when I was asked if I wanted to interview her, I jumped at it!  I was super pumped to get the opportunity to talk with one of the stars of my favorite shows.

*Note, as we just had a conversation, I wasn’t able to record this phone call.  All the answers below are based off my notes I took during the call.*

Tell me all about your new book, I Can Make You Hot:  The Supermodel Diet.

Kelly talked all about how she can make people hot!  She said hot stands for healthy options today.  She talked about how eating healthy and working out can make one hot.  But also that being hot is so much more than that.  If you want a “gummy bear martini” you should be able to have one!  She also talked about her own healthy eating habits that include eating “a salad with steak, fish or chicken” for dinner.

What are your favorite get fit tips?

“Six days on, one day off.”  Kelly talked about living healthy for six days and than taking one day off per week, Sunday, where she can eat whatever she would like.  She talked about if you are eating properly for those six days, you aren’t going to binge on the seventh day where you can eat whatever you’d like. 

What’s your current workout routine like?

“Simple, 20 minutes a day everyday of the week,” Kelly said.  She talked about how a “body in motion, stays in motion,” and that everyone just needs to commit to just those 20 minutes.  She said it is “really really simple and easy.”  She also talked about her love for running, and how it is a great workout that she does anywhere, even when its raining out.  She said all you need to do is “put on your shoes and go.”  She also encourages people to jump rope and do calisthenics like squats. 

Are you still a fan of candy?

Kelly said, “I’ll always be a fan of candy.”  She went on to say “sugar is fun and easy.”  She was stressing the point that people need to indulge a bit so they don’t go overboard with it later.  She talked about if someone wants a cookie, they should eat the cookies, not just take a bite or eat half of it.  You live once and should be able to enjoy the things you love. 

If you had to sum up your experience on Real Housewives of New York in one sentence, what would it be?

“Amazing platform” said Kelly.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

“Have no regrets.”  She talked about acknowledging the things you have done and moving on.  Don’t have regrets and just live you life.

You have amazing style, who is your favorite fashion designer?

Kelly said her style was “simple American style.” and that she wears a lot of Ralph Lauren.  She said she couldn’t name just one designer as her style is everything from higher end and also includes inexpensive items like a jacket she just bought recently from Zara.  She said she likes wearing pants, skinny jeans and jackets and that her style is also more traditional.  Kelly also said “don’t over do it,” when we we were talking about different looks.  She said the fashion magazines are more for dream looks.

What’s up next for you?

Kelly said she is pitching a show based off her new book, I Can Make You Hot:  The Supermodel Diet and also has some other things in the work that she couldn’t talk about.

Kelly was honestly the nicest, kindest and most personable celebrity I’ve ever talked too.  I didn’t know what to expect but she really did blow me away with her sweetness.  While I was interviewing her, baby Cameryn was making noise in the background and Kelly got really excited and asked if that was my baby making noise.  When I told her yes, she wanted to know all about Cameryn and was so genuinely happy to talk about the baby.  She also asked me questions about my life and the whole time I was thinking if feels like I’m just talking with one of my girlfriends and not interviewing Kelly Killoren Bensimon.  We chatted for a while more on pregnancy, she told me she gained 50 pounds with both her pregnancies.  She said she didn’t workout and she let her body tell her what it needed as it was the vessel for having a healthy baby.  She also said the experience of having to lose the baby weight helps her relate to people who are losing weight and she was glad she gained it.  We also talked about being the best we can be especially for our kids and wanting them to be the best they can be as well.  She also made it clear that she has been eating healthy for years, but there were times when she tried different diets, such as “eating an apple a day for five days.”  She said when she became a model, people kept telling her to lose ten pounds.  I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to speak with her and get her take on healthy living and fashion!  I love how open and honest she was.  Cameryn started crying so I knew it was time to wrap it up.  My last thoughts are I can’t wait to buy and read her book and I was really impressed with her.  I wish Kelly all the best with her new book and all her future endeavors.

    This is so cool! I’m so envious. I really liked Kelly on the Real Housewives NYC. I love her insight on eating what you want and taking a day off every week. Maybe I’ll think about trying that.

    she does seem really nice! I can’t believe she only works out 20 minutes a day! I like what she said too – a body in motion stays in motion! so true!
    I love the housewives!! Beverly Hills and OC are my favorite 🙂 But I like NY and NJ too. Not really an atlanta girl… but if there is nothing else on haha..

      She was such a sweetheart! The only celebrity I would get nervous to talk to is Betty White! Sad, but true!
