Pregnancy Update 27 Weeks: Rutabaga

I can’t believe I’m officially in the third trimester here at 28 weeks!  Depending on where you get your pregnancy information there is a few week window for when the third trimester starts.  Either week 26, 27 or 28.  So now I’m finally feel like I’m on the home stretch!

Lets looks at what baby has been up to in week 27:

 

Baby’s Size: At 13.6 to 14.8 inches and 1.5 to 2.5 pounds, she’s not just getting bigger, she’s getting smarter.

Baby Developments: 

  • She’s practicing inhaling and exhaling with her rapidly developing lungs.
  • It’s official: Baby’s showing brain activity! And her brain will keep on getting more complex.

At 27 weeks, baby is breathing (it’s amniotic fluid, not air, but it still counts) and even showing brain activity. You’ve got a lot on your brain, too, from wondering what labor and delivery is going to be like to trying to find the best pediatrician for baby. The annoying symptoms you’ve been having probably aren’t going away, but at least you’ve probably found some ways to deal with them — and hey, maybe you’re used to them right now. As you say goodbye to the second trimester, you can look forward to some pretty embarrassing stuff (like having to pee all the time — and maybe even when you don’t mean to at all) that’s all par for the late-pregnancy course. According to Baby Center here is the info on week 27:

This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (about the size of a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended. She’s sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby’s brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don’t bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.

How I’m Feeling Physically:

Week 27 was a great week!  I had a lot of energy at the beginning but at the end I could tell my energy was lagging a bit as it felt great to nap and rest a bit in the afternoons.  It is funny though because the days I worked out, I didn’t get that midafternoon energy slump.  Speaking of workouts, I think I got in four workouts and a couple yoga sessions.  I also did a couple dog walks.  Besides feeling pretty good overall, the bump is getting out of control HUGE!  I feel like a whale and can’t believe I still have 12 more weeks for the boy to grow!  I’m wondering how BIG I will get!  So far my weight gain is still a few pounds slower than it was with Cameryn but I still feel so much bigger.  The baby did flip from his favorite horizontal position and I believe he is now head down.  Just a guess.  I don’t have his knee/feet bulging out of my left side anymore which is welcome.  I definitely can feel the weight gain and I feel like I have an extra layer of fat all over my body.  I have been eating pretty healthy but on this final homestretch I need to get back to journaling my food to make sure my snacking during the day isn’t out of control.  I find myself snacking whenever Cameryn needs a snack or says she is hungry and I need to try and cut back on that a bit since I’m never truly hungry when she needs snacks.  I also need to keep my water intake super high as I read that is a great way to keep Braxton hicks at bay.  I mentioned in a post a few days ago that I was getting Braxton hicks while walking the dog.  I noticed them again while I was doing the elliptical at home, but today when I was running on the treadmill I didn’t get them so I do believe hydration or should I say over hydration really helps.  My only other noticeable change this week is my sleeping.  I feel like I have pregnancy insomnia.  When I wake up to use the bathroom at night, I can never fall back asleep.  It takes me hours.  It is so annoying and I hope I can start sleeping better as I can tell I’m tired although not exhausted.

 

How I’m feeling Emotionally: 

Emotionally I still can’t believe I’m even pregnant again, let alone this far along.  I’m so busy with Cameryn and all the other things I have going on that this pregnancy is going by so fast!  I honestly can’t believe how quickly it is going by.  Keith and I finally got our acts together a bit and ordered a BIG HAUL of baby boy items.  We found cute bedding at Pottery Barn Kids and also ordered a bunch of smaller items like bibs and burp cloths.  We still have a bit to buy but I feel like we are off to a great start.  We, and I mean Keith, also painted the baby’s room a light blue/gray.  His room was a medium gray and I felt it was too dark for his room so we tackled that project this weekend.  We also moved the crib from Cameryn’s room as well as her dresser so his room is pretty set up as far as furniture goes.  Speaking of furniture, it is so weird to walk into my first baby’s room and see a big girl full bed along with no baby items.  I still can’t wrap my head around the fact Cameryn is two and has a big girl toddler room.  I told Keith I wanted to cry when I was packing up her Boppy cover and putting it in a bin for storage.  Such a big girl!  I’m getting super excited to see how Cameryn acts as an older sister.  She loves pulling up my shirt and patting my stomach and giving it kisses.  She also talks about the baby but I’m not sure she really understands what’s happening.  She does get a little possessive of her baby items as I take them from her room and put them in her bros room.  It is cute to see and she is slowly getting over the fact that some of her old items will be her new brother’s soon.  Other than that, I’m feeling really at peace with this pregnancy.  I’m much more relaxed this time around.  I’ve started thinking of our birth plan (which was very relaxed with Cameryn) and I want to make a few changes to our very short and go with the flow mentality.  For example, I don’t want our son to get a Hep B shot right away.  I also want to try nursing him right away so his bath and other stuff will have to wait for at least an hour (assuming all goes well) and I also want to wait to clamp the cord until it has stopped pulsating.  I also need to look into baby boys getting circumcised.  I know nothing about it and what is common practice as far as how it goes down so I want to get informed about that as well so I feel comfortable. 

Oh and I don’t want to forget I had the glucola test this week for gestational diabetes!  I haven’t heard anything back yet, so fingers crossed I passed.  I will find out on Friday at our next prenatal appointment.

So that about wraps up week 27!  We have an ultrasound tomorrow that I’m so excited for!  The doctor wants to get new sizing measurements since baby boy is measuring large as am I.  I can’t wait to see him again and I’m curious to see what his measurements are!

Random Tidbits

  • Total Weight Gained:  15 lbs
  • Days Until our Next Appointment:  1, ultrasound tomorrow to get new sizing measurements of our big boy!
  • Cravings:  Yogurt, dried mangos, fruit, smoothies,
  • Workouts:  4 (2 gym and 2 cardio)
