Resin Veneers Vs. Porcelain: The Difference

Dental veneers are placed as a staple in cosmetic dentistry, with more than 10% growth every five years in the practice. Hollywood celebrities and even Instagram Influencers are widely adopting the practice.

If you are looking at veneers, you have probably encountered their materials already. Components like porcelain, resin, and composite are the main part of dental veneers. In this article, we will discuss different dental veneers in Winnipeg available for you.

Resin veneers vs. porcelain: The difference

Veneers create a new facade for teeth that might be cracked, chipped, worn, or stained. Veneers are best suited for front teeth. It improves the appearance of a smile and provides structural strength for biting or chewing.

To fix a veneer for a tooth, your dentist will shove down a thin layer of the tooth’s natural enamel. A resin coating is done on the back of the veneer that sticks to the new surface. Veneer material has significant durability, and even sometimes, the veneers turn out to be more fragile than a natural tooth.

Resin veneers

Resin veneers are a relatively cheaper option for veneers. It uses a composite material that safely and efficiently corrects the structure and shape of a tooth. Though they are cheaper options over porcelain, it does not mean they have no advantages over expensive veneers.

Advantages

The resin veneer can be prepared on the same day as the initial appointment. Your dentist will shape the material in the clinic. It also requires less enamel extraction than porcelain without additional extraction of the tooth’s enamel. You can also reverse the process without damaging the tooth or undergoing repairs with minimal pain, expense, and time.

Disadvantages

It does not last as long as porcelain veneers. You may expect to perform repairs twice out of every four to 8 years. It also has a tendency to take up color from the environment at a higher rate than porcelain ones.

Porcelain veneers

They come at a higher price but represent a more robust and durable cosmetic procedure. The material may differ, but the process remains the same.

Advantages

It can hold color better than resin veneers. The material will stain if it goes through heavy abuse from drinking dark liquids or smoking, but it will take a long time to show any signs. Porcelain veneers will last twice as the resin veneers, which is often ten to fifteen years. They will require regular care and maintenance, like any other dental cosmetic.

Disadvantages

It takes much time to install. Installation involves initial assessment, the temporary veneer, and then followed by permanent veneer. You have to visit at least two times before your teeth are finalized.
